Project goal

The overarching aim of TIDE was to enhance the take-up of urban transport innovation throughout Europe. More specifically, the project had the following specific goals:

• To stimulate broad discussion and exchange about transport innovations in five thematic fields,
• To build up a network of experts and take-up candidates for 15 Innovative Concepts,
• To refine existing transferability methodologies and integrate them into an easy to use transferability tool for cities and regions, To provide guidance on how to successfully implement the Innovative Concepts to practitioners in cities and regions,
• To work with cities on implementation scenarios and practical take-up (in some cities timing allows real implementation),
• To encourage the decision on implementing promising innovations via training and exchange events,
• To foster discussion on European level on stimulating framework conditions in policy and research for urban transport innovation,
• To raise awareness of the need for integrated approaches and SUMP,
• To contribute to a better understanding of the costs and benefits as well as the impact of urban transport innovations.

Results

TIDE focused on 15 innovative measures in five thematic clusters. Cities with long-lasting experience on the specific thematic areas and ambitious aims for future developments were the Cluster Leading Cities. They were assisted by Thematic Support Partners, which were consultancies and universities with proven expertise on the respective cluster topics. The five thematic clusters were (in brackets: Cluster leading Cities/ Thematic Support Partners):

1. Financing models and pricing measures (Milan/ WSP)
2. Non-motorised transport (Donostia San-Sebastián/ Rupprecht Consult)
3. Network and traffic management to support advanced traveller information systems (Reading/ TRG Southhampton)
4. Electric vehicles (Rotterdam/ Fraunhofer)
5. Public transport organisation (BKK Budapest/ Uni Gdansk)

Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans were a horizontal topic to integrate the cluster activities. The needs of practitioners in European cities and regions were a guiding principle throughout the whole project. A particular focus was also on providing guidance for finding cost-efficient solutions (cost-benefit analysis). The project refined existing transferability methodologies and integrated them into an easy to apply handbook for practitioners. Face-to-Face training and exchange events as well as handbooks and elearning on how to successfully implement innovative solutions were key tools to effectively support a wide range of take-up candidates in overcoming real or perceived barriers to implementation. A broad portfolio of dissemination activities ensured a high visibility of the project. In addition TIDE actively supported 15 committed cities (five Cluster Leading & 10 subcontracted Champion Cities) that demonstrated how to successfully prepare the implementation of urban transport innovation providing examples to a wider group of take-up candidates.
