Developing the Multimodal Traffic Management Roadmap for 2030 and Beyond

25.11.2024

The first look of the MTM Roadmap for 2030 and beyond was shared during the session on 'Enhancing Traffic Management with Digital Twins and AI at the CIVITAS Forum last month in Parma, Italy.

Rupprecht Consult has been actively involved in developing the Multimodal Traffic Management (MTM) Roadmap for 2030 and Beyond. The roadmap is a collaborative achievement under the Multimodal Traffic Management Cluster (MTMC), which brings together seven EU-funded Horizon Europe research projects: DiT4TRAM, FRONTIER, ORCHESTRA, TANGENT, SYNCHROMODE, DELPHI, and ACUMEN. The MTMC focuses on fostering innovation and integrating multimodal traffic management systems across Europe to create sustainable, efficient, and resilient transport networks.

Highlights of the Roadmap:

The MTM Roadmap addresses three critical dimensions:

Technologies and Services: The roadmap explores leveraging advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cooperative Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM), and advanced Decision Support Systems (DDS) to create adaptive and resilient transport systems.

Data Ecosystem: Emphasising the importance of a comprehensive and interoperable data ecosystem, the roadmap highlights frameworks like the European Mobility Data Space (EMDS) and initiatives such as NAPCORE to enable seamless data sharing and predictive analytics.

Policy Framework: To support multimodal traffic management, the roadmap calls for harmonised regulations, cross-border cooperation, and alignment of local, national, and EU-level policies. These measures aim to advance sustainability link with Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) and meet climate neutrality goals under the Smart and Sustainable Mobility Strategy (SSMS).

Role of Rupprecht Consult:

Rupprecht Consult provided critical insights and direction in the roadmap’s development, specifically focusing on integrating research findings from projects like TANGENT and SYNCHROMODE. Daniel Franco and Lakshya Pandit contributed to chapters detailing policy status quo, the integration to align MTM with urban and regional planning initiatives like Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), and pathways to adopt identified strategies.

Significance of the Roadmap:

The MTM Roadmap provides a strategic vision for achieving a seamless and efficient multimodal transport system by 2030. It outlines practical pathways for cities to adopt cutting-edge traffic management strategies, optimize transport networks, and address challenges like data privacy, interoperability, and public acceptance of new technologies.

This document is poised to serve as a guiding framework for policymakers, urban planners, and transport operators across Europe, paving the way for a greener, safer, and smarter mobility future. This document, which was published last month during the prestigious CIVITAS Forum, is now officially registered with ISBN 978-618-80673-6-3, solidifying its importance in shaping the future of urban mobility. For more information, the roadmap is accessible via the MTMC official site.
