Webinar on Resilience and Transport took place on 28 October

01.11.2020

The webinar "Resilience and Transport: SUMPs & COVID-19, planning in times of uncertainty" was part of the Learning Programme on SUMPs for Latin America in the framework of our support to the Euroclima+ and Mobilise Your City programmes. It aimed to reflect on the importance of SUMPs to better respond in times of crisis and uncertainty. The event was organised together with TUMI and GIZ Ecuador.

The crisis generated by COVID-19 has shown how unsustainable and inequitable the mobility systems in many cities are. We have realised how much priority has been given to individual transport compared to other modes such as walking and cycling. This crisis has revealed the importance of having mobility plans that provide a broad diversity of transport options with quality and equity. Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) have proven to be a crucial piece in the transformation of mobility in the region: Some Latin American cities have managed to take advantage of the circumstances and promoted non-motorised environments as well as opportunities for active mobility. The development of their SUMPs during the crisis actually pushed the paradigm shift towards green transport in Latin America. In the session, our colleague Susanne Böhler-Baedeker presented her insights on how COVID-19 affected cities worldwide and what measurements local governments were able to take. Laura Babío, project officer at POLIS Cities and Regions for Transport Innovation, presented the COVID-19 and SUMPs Practitioner Briefing published by the EU Commission in June 2020. And, Diana Garces from the Municipality of Ambato (one of our SUMP partner cities) presented on the Emergency Mobility Plan developed by local authorities to respond to the crisis. This plan will become a part of the SUMP knowledge resources and provide input for its future development. The session was quite insightful and gathered over 110 engaged attendees throughout the online event.
