Frank Wefering presented the concept of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) at a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) workshop in Belgrade on 21 September 2012.
The workshop gathered planners and urban mobility stakeholders from the capital Belgrade and other Serbian municipalities. It served as a platform to raise awareness of SUMP as a new planning approach for local and regional authorities on their way to a people-focussed and sustainable urban mobility. Since the beginning of 2011, UNDP Serbia has been implementing a project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that aims to enhance the sustainability of urban transport in the City of Belgrade by supporting the development of its first SUMP. The UNDP workshop on SUMP was organised within the European Mobility Week. It showed that investments in infrastructure remain crucial for Serbia and its municipalities. However, the workshop also demonstrated the need for more thorough stakeholder and citizen involvement processes and better exchange among different disciplines and sectors as important elements to pave the way towards a more sustainable and people-focussed transport system. Discussions with urban mobility stakeholders at the workshop in Belgrade confirmed the importance of further promoting the concept of SUMP in Serbia.
