On Monday 24th of October, the Japanese Research Institute for Local Public Transport held a press conference to announce the publication of the Japanese edition of the SUMP.
On Monday 24th of October, the Japanese Research Institute for Local Public Transport held a press conference to announce the publication of the Japanese edition of the SUMP. The SUMP translation, was introduced by Professor Kiyoto Utsunomiya of Kansai University and Mitsunobu Kojima, President of the Institute, and Takaji Shibayama, Senior Researcher at the Vienna University of Technology. Toshiaki Machida, Managing Director of the Institute, chaired the event. Rupprecht Consult's owner and Executive Director, Siegfried Rupprecht, introduced the concept of SUMP at the conference through and online presentation.
The institute translated the SUMP guidelines in Japanese under the supervision of Professor Kiyoto Utsunomiya and Takaji Shibayama. The translated guidelines will be available as an online and paper version.
Mitsunobu Kojima explained the significance of the project, saying, "Local public transportation will not become profitable, and it is necessary to incorporate the European-style way of thinking in which the national government, local governments, and citizens cooperate rather than leaving it up to the private sector." Professor Utsunomiya emphasized, "SUMP is not something else, but something we should aim for."
The press conference was a success as multiple journalists raised their interest in the guidelines which will be followed by multiple news articles distributed nationwide. In addition, it has already been taken up in discussions at the Toyama Prefecture Regional Transportation Strategy Council.
