Izmir’s SUMP team gains momentum through training about blue-green corridors and neighbourhoods

11.12.2023

Ralf Brand equipped the SUMP Izmir team with innovative strategies for integrating blue and green elements into Izmir's urban fabric during a recent two day training event.

Izmir recently hosted a two-day training for its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) team on November 28 and 29, 2023. The focus was on weaving water and vegetation into the city's fabric, mostly along four corridors identified as future blue-green assets. These corridors have the potential to both provide opportunities for (active) mobility and to serve as pleasant destinations in themselves.

Dr. Ralf Brand from Rupprecht Consult led the two-day training event to equip the team with innovative strategies for integrating blue and green elements into Izmir's urban infrastructure. Given the geographically focused nature of these blue-green corridors, Ralf Brand also contributed his insights about neighborhood-based planning through a co-creation approach.

Woonerfen, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, and Superblocks were among the examples presented as sources of inspiration; but such ideas have to be adapted to the specific Izmiri context – this was done through workshops on both afternoons, which led to interesting results. Some groups also used innovative visualization tools (like AI image generators), which Ralf also presented as part of his input.

Rupprecht Consult is a key partner in the consortium that supports the city of Izmir for creating its SUMP. Our colleague Bonnie Fenton already shared her know-how on all aspects of micromobility in the same training series, a few weeks earlier.
