Vital Nodes kicks off in Vienna!

20.11.2017

On November 14th, the Vital Nodes project held its project kick-off meeting in Vienna. It is funded by the EU’s Horizon2020 R&D Programme and will run for 24 months, starting on 1 November 2017.

Vital Nodes aims to enable efficient, sustainable freight delivery across the TEN-T urban nodes, by bringing together existing European, national and regional networks. As a result of increasing freight traffic, these urban nodes need to cope with challenges such as congestion, poor air quality, noise, and road safety risks. The objective of the initiative is to improve European interconnection, while developing sustainable mobility within cities.

The project will support the deployment of innovations in and deliver evidence-based recommendations for efficient and sustainable integration of all 88 urban nodes into the TEN-T network corridors, addressing specifically the multi- and the intermodal connection between long-distance and last-mile freight logistics. It will also establish a long-lasting European expert network based on existing (inter)national and regional networks for safeguarding long-term continuity in knowledge and implementation. The kick-off meeting was held in the facilities of the Thinkport Vienna, a think tank and mobility-lab within the vast premises of the Port of Vienna. This central logistic hub provided the perfect real-life environment for Vital Nodes´ inauguration. The meeting counted with participants from all consortium members:
  • Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment (project lead)
  • Transport administrations (Rijkswaterstaat/NL, Trafiverket/SE, Flemish Spatial Planning Authority/BE)
  • City networks (Polis and EUROCITIES, Urban Innovation Vienna)
  • Corridor organisations (EGTC Rhine Alpine Corridor/DE)
  • Project consultancies (Uniresearch, Ecorys/NL and Rupprecht Consult/DE).
Rupprecht Consult 's role includes amongst other things the customization of take-up and node-integration strategies, and the wide-scale deployment of innovative solutions covering all 88 urban nodes of the TEN-T.
