The 2020 AVS (Automated Vehicle Symposium) took place completely online. In their breakout session on 'no-regret options for policy making and infrastructure development', Siegfried Rupprecht, Wolfgang Backhaus, and Daniel Franco sparked interesting conversations reaching far into the uncharted waters of road vehicle automation.
The AVS is an annual event initiated by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and the Transportation Research Board (TRB). Furthermore, AVS is supported by leading organisations in the automotive, logistics and technology sectors as well as research institutions and road authorities. This year’s event was held completely online and took place between July 27th and July 30th, including speakers from public sector organisations such as the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and Volpe National Transportations Systems Center as well as from tech powerhouses such as Uber, Lyft, Waymo and automotive giants such as Toyota and Hyundai.
In their session called 'no-regret options for policy making and infrastructure development', our colleagues engaged a panel of experts from both the U.S. and Europe in a discussion on preparatory measures and policies that can be implemented now in preparation for road vehicle automation. Furthermore, ‘no regret options’ were defined as actions that are beneficial in every automation scenario as well as during the transition phase, creating co-benefits for conventional vehicles along the way. Some of the key outcomes of the panel are:
- It is recommendable to get away from the ‘predict, then act’ paradigm and move towards more agile and adaptive decision-making,
- It is necessary to start taking incremental steps in the fields of physical infrastructure, C-ITS capabilities and regulation,
- Public-private cooperation is crucial to develop business models that prioritise shared mobility.
