Rupprecht Consult advising the Brazilian government on sustainable urban mobility planning

21.12.2012

Brazil adopted a national policy on Urban Mobility in early 2012 making it obligatory for any municipality with more than 20,000 inhabitants to develop an urban mobility plan by 2015.

The Brazilian Ministry of Cities looked to Europe for support and contracted Frank Wefering of Rupprecht Consult as an external expert to advise on sustainable urban mobility planning. Frank will contribute a national guidance document intended to support Brazilian municipalities to develop and ultimately implement urban mobility plans. On 10-11 December 2012, the Brazilian Ministry of Cities organised an international workshop on urban mobility policies and plans in Brasília. Frank presented the EU-promoted concept of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) and the SUMP Guidelines at this event to more than one hundred participants from Brazil, Europe and the United States. On 12 December 2012, he gave a presentation on the technical details of the SUMP concept during a national training seminar for urban mobility planners in Brasília. The activities are part of a Sector Dialogue on Urban Mobility Planning between Brazil and the European Union.
