Ralf Brand gave a guest lecture at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul on April 22nd 2014. The title of his talk was “The role of technology, citizens and technizens in the sustainable city”. The deliberate hybrid term technizen signals his proposal to steer clear of simplistic technical or social “fix” approaches in the discourse around sustainable urbanism. Instead, Ralf argues for a “synchronisation” or “co-evolution” between social and technical change. The audience consisted of staff and final-year students of Bahçeşehir’s architecture programme, which offers a special focus on sustainable architecture and urbanism.
