CoExist final conference took place online

After three years of hard work, we met our partners on 25 and 26 March to discuss final findings and main outputs of the CoExist project.
As meeting face-to-face was not an option due to the current global crisis, we shifted the entire conference to a virtual “meeting room”. Even though we were counting on several things to go wrong because of the last-minute change and our dependence on technology, we managed to hear and see all of our speakers and were amazed by the high numbers of attendees and rates of participation during both days! On the first day, the simulation tools developed within CoExist were presented and their functionality for the decision-making and planning process of cities was discussed. Furthermore, eight use cases were presented by CoExist’s four city partners, providing an overview of realistic scenarios including automated vehicles.
The tools help to assess use cases in the area of cooperative, connected and automated mobility and support the development of a structured and tangible basis for strategies. Thereby, general uncertainty can be reduced and planning can follow clearer guidelines. Overall, individual cities seemingly have to prepare for a worst-case scenario before they can work out a best-case of how to integrate automation into their mobility plan.
On the second day, a hands-on training of the CoExist tools was given and learnings and next steps of CoExist city partners were presented. The conference ended with an interactive session, gathering opinions from our attendees and discussing ideas from attendees and partners. It was made clear that tools highly rely on the assumptions that modelers take into account and that real-life cases from cities help to generate more realistic results. The relevance of our tools was proven, especially in the context of managing expectations and adjusting plans accordingly within a process of continuous improvement.We thank all attendees for their high motivation and participation during both days up until the very end of our sessions!
