Aiming to involve key stakeholders and citizens along the SUMP development process, the Municipality of Arequipa organised its first forum together with the German and French institutions GIZ and AFD and our consortium (Egis - Rupprecht Consult). The focus of the forum was: Challenges and opportunities for sustainable urban mobility in Arequipa.
The event took place in a digital format via Zoom with live transmission on the Facebook page of the Municipality of Arequipa on 10 and 11 December. The purpose of the forum was to initiate the process of formulating the sustainable urban mobility plan, to find out what stakeholders expect from the contents of the SUMP and to identify and engage stakeholders in the development and implementation of the SUMP. GIZ, AFD, the consulting consortium as well as various public and private institutions are accompanying the project to support the integration of stakeholders in an organisational and content-related manner.The event was organised in four sessions covering general aspects of sustainable mobility and SUMP, non-motorised transport, public transport and governance along the SUMP process. It was opened by the Head of Transport Management office of the Municipality of Arequipa, German Cutimbo, and the general manager Sonia Anglada joined by representatives of GIZ in Peru. After that, our local and international experts provided inputs along the topics mentioned above. For instance, our colleague Katy Huaylla shared a presentation on the basics, challenges and benefits of SUMP for Arequipa. Input sessions were followed by panel discussions with several local governmental and non-governmental organisations such as different management offices of the Municipality, Ministry of Housing, School of Architects, Society of Urbanists, universities and cycling and environmental NGOs. The civil society participated along with polls and direct questions and comments to the presenters and panellists.
