Public transport is experiencing difficult times due to the global Covid 19 pandemic. Fear of infection has led to huge falls in passenger numbers and subdued use of metros, trams and buses. This poses major challenges for the public transport sector. Some fear that individual car transport could emerge as a big winner from this crisis.
However, we believe that the challenges in this crisis can become an opportunity! The public sector has shown that it is able to maintain its services as a reliable and inclusive sustainable mode of transport. To meet the climate change targets of the Paris Agreement and the EU by 2030 and 2050 respectively, public transport needs to be an even stronger backbone for sustainable mobility systems in our cities and regions. Authorities and mobility planners need to stick to their long-term goals for the development of sustainable mobility systems and further strengthen the positive developments during the crisis, e.g. the increasing use of bicycles, and complement them with a modern and sustainable public transport system.
With the coming decade to 2030, the ambitious targets of the Green Deal and the implementation of the Clean Vehicle Directive provide us with important push factors from the European Commission. We are pleased that the trolleybus will be part of this movement. Trolleybuses are considered clean and emission-free vehicles. Their flexibility rises if they are equipped with a battery so that they can leave the catenary system. The battery charges during the drive under the catenary, this is called "In -Motion-Charging" (IMC). When leaving the catenary grid, the bus can cover new areas in battery-mode.
In the trolley:2.0 project, our project partners and we have developed solutions for energy-efficient and smart trolleybus systems over the last three years.
