Planning for a liveable city
27.06.2014
First European Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans in Sopot, Poland (12-13 June 2014) gathers over 140 urban mobility planners and implementers from 24 countries
Rupprecht Consult was responsible for the organisation and thematic coordination of the first European-wide conference specifically dedicated to the topic of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP). The conference with the motto 'planning for a liveable city' attracted urban mobility planners and implementers from all over Europe. Workshops offered new insights and lively discussions on hot SUMP topics:
- Participation as a challenge in urban mobility planning
- Auditing procedures
- Evaluating SUMP benefits
- Integration of transport, land-use and health planning
- Integration of transport forms and modes
- Austerity and urban mobility planning
- The role of national networks to promote the uptake of SUMP
- Member States and regional actions to encourage local authorities to develop SUMPs
- Urban mobility planning in cities and towns below 100,000 inhabitants
Highlights of the conference include a presentation by Mircea Enache, the Romanian-American founder of the Bucharest-based Center for Excellence in Planning who explored the links between urban mobility planning and the development of property values. Wojciech Suchorzewski, a highly respected professor from the Warsaw University of Technology analysed the status of urban mobility planning in Poland and what it takes to get from Public Transport Master Plans (obligatory for all Polish cities above 50,000 inhabitants) to SUMPs. Marcin Wolek, Professor at the University of Gdansk and City Councillor of nearby Gdynia presented the action plan of the Competence Center for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans in the Baltic Sea Region. The new Center which is run under the CIVITAS-Dyn@mo project was formally opened during the final plenary session of the conference. Our own Siegfried Rupprecht presented the independent Rupprecht Quality Certificate - a SUMP assessment scheme developed by Rupprecht Consult helping cities to ensure the quality and validate compliance of their urban mobility plan with the requirements of the SUMP Guidelines. A Market Place of Ideas and Offers allowed participants to explore the planned activities of the more than a dozen EU-supported international projects related to SUMP. The conference was the first of its kind. Rupprecht Consult will be responsible to organise two more European Conferences on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans in 2015 and 2016 via its involvement in the ENDURANCE project.
