Arequipa, the biggest city in the south of Peru, has just kicked off the development of its SUMP, which will enable a better integration of transport modes and set up a long-term vision towards transforming mobility and reaching a better quality of life in the city.
Arequipa has kicked off its SUMP after a longer than expected preparation time. Finally, the start was carried out with a public launch on 9 December 2020 lead by the Mayor of the city, Omar Candia Aguilar, and with participation of key local stakeholders such as local council members and managers of the Municipality of Arequipa, French Agency of Development (AFD) representatives, our consortium (Egis & Rupprecht Consult), and the local media.
The event started with a welcome from the Head of the Transport Management office of the Municipality, German Cutimbo. After that, AFD representative Laurent Pacoud presented the projects that AFD supports in Arequipa including the SUMP Arequipa in the framework of the Euroclima+ programme. Then, our colleague Katy Huaylla, in representation of our consortium, shared the general SUMP process and a summary of the expected outcomes of SUMP on Arequipa. Finally, Omar Candia Aguilar highlighted the importance of the SUMP to support the achievement of his political commitments to provide healthy and sustainable transport for citizens of Arequipa.
We are very proud to be part of this project and excited to support the transformation of mobility in Arequipa!
