FLOW presented at the European Conference on Mobility Management in Athens

Bonnie Fenton from Rupprecht Consult presented the FLOW project at the European Conference on Mobility Management in Athens, Greece on 3 June 2016. The conference attracted practitioners and decision makers from across Europe and featured Tim Papandreou, Director of the Office of Innovation at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Maria Vassilakou, Deputy Mayor of the City of Vienna.   There was strong interest in FLOW’s claim that the transportation benefits of walking and cycling need to be emphasised and measured along with the economic, health and environmental benefits. Particular interest was shown in FLOW’s Market Forerunners component, which brings together consultants who work with transport modelling tools to demonstrate the need for accurate and appropriate inclusion of cyclists and pedestrians in transport modelling tools so that they are accurately represented in the outcomes of modelling activities.   For more information on the FLOW Market [...]

SWITCH online course open to the public

The SWITCH online course has been made open to the public on Rupprecht Consult’s learning platform www.mobility-academy.eu/SWITCH. The course is among the key outputs of the SWITCH project, which supports cities that wish to organise and run campaigns that encourage citizens to “switch” short urban trips from their car to active modes of travel such as walking and cycling.   The SWITCH methodology is based on four key elements:   -          Personalised Travel Planning, that is, individually tailored support for individual people through information, advice, recommendations for cycling routes etc. -          Positive and personalised health arguments to highlight the direct and concrete benefits one can gain from active transport. -          Use of ICT tools that can monitor, reward and remind people of active mobility routines; this is intended to deepen new forms of mobility to lasting habits. -          A focus on people in a so-called life change moment (e.g. when they [...]

SWITCH Progress Meeting

The SWITCH progress meeting was held in our office in Cologne on December 1st and 2nd. Participants from Gdansk (Poland), Antwerp (Belgium), Vienna (Austria), Donastia/San Sebastian (Spain) and London Borough of Hounslow (UK) successfully presented first results from their behaviour change campaigns.   RC is responsible for Follower Cities which would like to adapt the SWITCH approach to a local campaign. 11 cities have already drafted an implementation scenario for their cities which will be reviewed by our technical partners like Walk21, the European Cyclist’s Federation, and more.   In a meeting break nearly all participants took advantage to test the new bike sharing system in Cologne. Not even the bad weather could stop the group. And a big compliment to Steven Windey (red circled) who cycled to the progress meeting! His starting point was his hometown Antwerp. Nearly 250 km for one way. Congratulation Steven!   That is a real commitment and shows that not only short car [...]

Commemorating the victims in Paris

On this day of official mourning we join our friends in France and across Europe in commemorating the victims of the recent atrocities in Paris. Our sympathies are with everyone who has lost friends or relatives through these acts of violence. We declare our solidarity with all who are working for stronger cooperation and a better understanding of people from different cultures and backgrounds in Europe. Through our projects, we are trying to make a small contribution to this historical process of reuniting Europe - in hope for a more equitable and peaceful world.   Siegfried Rupprecht, on behalf of the entire Rupprecht Consult team.

SUMP Self-Assessment Tool launched in Brussels and Istanbul!

Is your mobility plan a genuine Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan? You can now find out using the free, online SUMP Self-Assessment Tool available on www.eltis.org The SUMP Self-Assessment Tool has been designed to enable planning authorities to quickly assess the compliance of their plan with the European Commission’s SUMP Guidelines (January 2014). Self-assessment is based on a set of 100 clear and transparent yes-no questions that follow the steps in the well-known SUMP preparation cycle. By working through the questionnaire during plan preparation or once a plan has been finalised, planning authorities can gain feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their approach. For anybody who is not yet familiar with the concept or the terminology, the Self-Assessment questionnaire is also linked to a newly published online version of the SUMP Guidelines, an informative SUMP Glossary and a range of online learning resources on the Mobility Academy website. On 20 November 2015, the [...]

Pilot version of SUMP Self-Assessment Scheme launched for peer review

Rupprecht Consult has developed a pioneering SUMP Self-Assessment Scheme that is currently undergoing a period of testing by planning authorities and mobility practitioners. The free, online self-assessment tool enables planning authorities to demonstrate the compliance of their mobility planning process with the European Commission‘s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) concept.   Based on the plan-making steps of the „Guidelines – developing and implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan“ (January 2014), the self-assessment scheme comprises 100 questions divided into nine sections. These cover the early stages of planning, such as the commitment of a city to sustainable mobility principles, through to scenario development, mobility measure selection and finally plan adoption.   The rationale for providing a SUMP self-assessment tool and the structure of the scheme were explained during webinars held on 22nd and 29th October 2015. The subsequent pilot phase for testing of [...]
